Dumbbells are free weights that are designed to fit the hand perfectly. There are two main types of dumbbell:
Fixed weight – These consist of a fixed moulded weight. The advantage of fixed dumbbells, is their durability and ruggedness, however you’ll require a pair of dumbbells for each weight you use.
Interchangeable – Consist of a separate bar (handle), weight plates and collars to stop the weight plates coming loose. Their strength lays in the fact that a single dumbbell can be widely adjusted in weight.
Lifting dumbbells is key to building upper body strength as they work closely with the natural movements of your joints and muscles. A good set of dumbbells will last years and can be used in a wide variety of exercises.
